Local AI vs cloud AI for meeting transcription
Transcription used to require the cloud. It doesn't anymore — and for meetings, the local option now wins on more dimensions than most people expect.
Accuracy: effectively tied
Whisper-class models run identically on a modern laptop and on a server. A MacBook or a recent Windows machine with a GPU transcribes with the same models the cloud services use behind the scenes. The old accuracy gap is gone.
Cost, latency, and the meter
Cloud transcription bills by the minute, forever — a real cost when meetings are hours of your week. Local transcription is a one-time model download and your own electricity. Latency favors local too: no upload, no queue, live transcripts as people speak.
Privacy and offline: not close
Cloud transcription means your conversations exist on someone else's infrastructure; local means they never leave your disk. And when the network drops — travel, secure sites, bad Wi-Fi — local keeps transcribing while cloud tools stop entirely.
When cloud still makes sense
Very old hardware, or building a server-side product at scale. For an individual or team recording their own meetings on modern machines, local-first is simply the better engineering — which is why Wavren AI runs Whisper locally by default and keeps the cloud strictly optional.
