Frequently asked questions
Is my audio sent to the cloud?
Never. Recording, transcription and note-making all run on your computer. The app keeps working with the internet turned off.
What AI runs locally?
Whisper (speech-to-text) and Qwen (summaries, notes and refinement) — downloaded once on first launch, then they are yours, on your machine.
Do I need an account?
No. Sign-in is optional — it only identifies your license so a purchase follows you to a new computer.
What does the free plan include?
Unlimited dictation, and meeting notes for meetings up to 5 minutes. Plus removes every limit. Pro also removes all telemetry. Each is a one-time purchase — no subscriptions.
Where is my data stored?
On your disk: recordings in your Movies folder under wispr-notes-recordings, notes and settings in the app’s data folder. Delete those and nothing exists anywhere.
What do I need to run it?
A modern computer with 8 GB of memory (16 GB recommended for the best models). Available today for Apple Silicon Macs; Windows and Linux are in development.
Which languages work?
Transcription understands roughly 100 languages, with automatic detection and optional translation to English.
How does dictation work?
Hold the dictation key in any app, speak, release — your words are typed at the cursor, punctuated.
Can it take notes on my calls?
Yes — it captures your microphone and the call audio together, detects calls automatically, and stops when the call ends. Always make sure participants are okay with being recorded.
What data do you collect?
Anonymous usage counts and crash reports — never audio, transcripts or notes. The Pro plan switches even that off.
How do updates work?
The app checks for cryptographically signed updates and installs them in place. Your data never moves.
Can I get a refund?
Within 14 days, no questions asked — email support@wisprnotes.com.
